On the Taxonomy of Crickets
On Crickets
The text says: "Among the things in the world, those that are beloved by people will surely not be abandoned by a gentleman. Why? Because the things born from Heaven are not uniform, and people’s preferences are also different. Preferences are not superficial; they arise from the feelings of one’s nature. When feelings arise and there is an affinity for something, it means that there must be something worthy within it. Otherwise, it cannot be considered truly liked. As for the cricket, it lives in warm places during the day and seeks human shelter when cold. It seems to respond to touch—if you stroke its head, its tail will react, and if you stroke its tail, its head will respond. It seems to understand human intentions. It even fights with its kind, showing a fierce and admirable demeanor. How could such a subtle creature not be valued? This is why a gentleman cherishes and loves it; it is not an exaggeration. I have pondered this: there are things in the world that cannot be fully appreciated, and a gentleman has reasons for unique preferences. For example, the cricket is known by various names: Sa Ji, Luo Wei, Qiong, and Xi Shuai, each name reflecting its different types. It can be found on walls, in doorways, in attics, or under beds, showing different responses to the seasons. Such a small creature that can detect the suitability of the Yin and Yang and adjust its behavior is truly remarkable! The admiration for crickets extends far back to the Tang Dynasty and continues to this day. Among all people, from princes and scholars to commoners, the wealthy, and heroes, everyone values and cherishes them. It is also worth noting that in autumn and winter, crickets born in grass or soil or under stones may transform over the years, with their offspring growing larger or smaller depending on the time of year.
When the white dew is strong and the cold dew fades, crickets born in grass or soil are soft; those born in brick or stone are firm. Crickets from shallow grass, barren soil, brick, stone, deep pits, or sunny areas are of lesser quality. The colors of crickets vary: red is better than black, black is better than red, and red is better than yellow. Red and yellow crickets with large heads, fat necks, long legs, and wide bodies are preferable. Black and white crickets with pointed heads, narrow necks, thin legs, and light bodies are less desirable. There are also variations such as flower-patterned heads, reddish teeth, grayish necks, white ribs and wings, broad wings, single tails, bald mustaches, crooked lines on the forehead, curved tails, raised wings, turtle backs, shrimp-like backs, and cricket shapes resembling mantises, dogs, or butterflies. Each type reflects different characteristics. Purple-headed crickets are particularly brave; bright-colored ones are flashy but lack substance. Crickets with copper-colored heads, long teeth, and excellent colors are often courageous. Crickets with injuries or missing legs should be observed carefully. Four flaws should be avoided: 1. Raised head; 2. Curled antennae; 3. Tattered teeth; 4. Kicking legs. If a cricket has mismatched tail lengths or drooping tails, it is likely old and should be discarded. If a cricket shows signs of fatigue from heat or injury from cold, it should not be neglected. Proper care is crucial; otherwise, the cricket may not survive, and its fighting ability could be compromised. Hence, a gentleman who loves crickets knows how to care for them. Understanding their care ensures that they remain in good condition.
On Crickets
Preface: In the third autumn, during the seventh month, when the air is filled with the crispness of autumn, crickets emerge. I describe the subtle and profound mechanisms of their care and present this as a guide. Every aspect of care follows ancient methods; a few words of advice can benefit future generations. The container must be traditional, and the equipment must be precise. In hot weather, always bathe the cricket in water; in the cold autumn, quickly fill the bottom of the container with mud. The container should have white flower grass at the bottom to drain excess moisture, and then provide yellow rice to maintain energy. The food should not be excessive, and water should not be lacking. For narrow jaws, occasionally feed blood-filled mosquitoes; if there is internal heat and lazy chirping, feed bean sprouts. For constipation, give shrimp; for dizziness, use a tea bath with chuanxiong. If bitten, quickly use child’s urine or earthworm manure mixed and applied to the wound. Avoid crickets with damaged tails or missing limbs, and keep them away from competition. If the cricket becomes tired or injured, use proper treatments to ensure recovery. Crickets should be separated by sound if they are too close. At dusk, feed them; if it’s midnight or later, listen to the female's call. The cricket's body should be like a cluster of flowers, with a bright red sound. The body should not be covered in three-colored patterns, but should have a long and victorious leg. The body should be narrow for strength and wide for durability. Black and white crickets are less effective, while green and yellow are better. Crickets with short tails should be discarded; broken bells should not be sought out. Such crickets are not worth the effort.
Further Discussion
Crickets are autumn insects, also known as Chu Zhi or Sun Wang, and called Zuan Zhi by the people of Huqiu. An anonymous author once wrote a guide on breeding crickets, which became beloved by many. The book titled "On the Origins of Life and Transformation" discusses the cricket's characteristics and is the reason for this text. Crickets change with the seasons, and their offspring may grow or shrink depending on the year. In white dew, they thrive; in cold dew, they diminish. Crickets from grass or soil are tender, while those from brick or stone are firm. Shallow grass and thin soil produce black and white crickets, while thick bricks and deep pits yield red and yellow ones. Those in the shade are delicate; those in the sun are inferior. Red is better than black, black is better than red, red is better than yellow, and yellow is better than green. Small red and large black crickets are suitable for combat, while large yellow and small white crickets are less effective. Red and yellow crickets with large heads, fat necks, long legs, and wide bodies are preferable, while black and white crickets with pointed heads, thin necks, small legs, and light bodies are less desirable. Knowing and appreciating their characteristics ensures proper care and usage. A poem is presented to reflect on these observations.
On Listening to Crickets at Night
The Lord of the Vast Void Lord Tai Xu lived in seclusion, savoring the way of the Tao, unaware of the passage of time and the changes of the seasons. He spent his days leisurely, often watching green moss grow on the pavilion and fragrant dust settle on the terrace. In his solitude, he harbored long-held feelings of melancholy, unable to find joy throughout the night.
Thus, he walked along the path of orchids and entered the serene garden of osmanthus. The wind swept through the cold mountains and brushed against the autumn walls. Standing by the deep ravine, he lamented the distance; climbing the high hills, he mourned the far horizon.
At this time, the slanted Milky Way hung low in the sky, the northern lands shadowed while the southern lands brightened. The white dew warmed the sky, and the pure moon glided across the heavens. A cool breeze lifted his sleeves, and the sound of crickets extended far and wide. Reflecting on ancient texts, he earnestly recited the poems of Tang and the hymns of Bin. He took up his brush and wrote a letter to the ethereal realm.
Kong Xuan, kneeling, replied, "I, your humble servant from the eastern outskirts, have long lived in the hills and fields, ignorant in the study of the Tao, but fortunate to receive your enlightened grace. I have heard that those who dwell in the depths find meaning, and those who rise to the heights attain enlightenment. The cycles of the seasons pass swiftly, and time does not pause. The four seasons follow one another, and all things move and change in endless cycles. Observing the growth of flowers in their season and witnessing the rise and fall of all things, I cannot help but be overwhelmed by the constancy of change.
Alas, the essence of autumn brings with it a sense of sorrow; how could one avoid endless melancholy? The trees in the courtyard shed their leaves in the fierce wind, the heavens grow clearer and higher, and the sun shines weakly while the rain gradually withdraws. Birds return to their nests in the wild, and swallows gather in the lowlands. The steps are adorned with jade dew, and the water reflects the reeds and lotuses. How short the sunlight feels in autumn, yet the long nights seem to stretch endlessly.
The sun rises over the eastern marsh, and the morning light spreads across the salty river. The mythical Jade Rabbit appears in the emperor's palace, and the Moon Maiden gathers in the back hall. Now, as the atmosphere clears and the clouds disperse, the leaves begin to fall, and the waves stir on Lake Dongting. The fragrance of chrysanthemums fills the mountain peaks, and the cries of wild geese echo along the riverbanks.
At this time, the wild insects enter the house, seeking warmth and companionship. They hide in the crevices of the broken walls, their tiny bodies huddled together. They timidly approach the closed door, peeking under the bed to get closer. Some are called grasshoppers, moving their legs; others are named crickets, hastening their chirps. Some are known as katydids, shaking their wings; others are crickets, singing the songs of autumn.
They chirp and chirp, filling the air with their clear, lingering sounds. Their delicate notes spread like white silk threads. Their song is as skillful as the cries of the cicadas, yet they lack the continuous flow of sound. Their voices are as intricate as the warbling of orioles, but their frequency is unmatched.
Listening to their sounds, they are light and distant, like birds in the marshes, incomparable to any other. Their high notes are majestic, surpassing the sunbird’s call. Their sorrowful tones evoke the tears of the wife of the Duke of Wu as she cried on her boat. Their angry notes stir the emotions of those wandering in exile, making them resentful.
What night is this that I hear such delicate sounds? Looking up, I see the constellations fading, and the Milky Way concealing its light. The gentle frost settles like snow, and the moon is as clear as a water mirror. My sleeves are dampened with dew as I walk around, listening to the continuous chirping of crickets. Their pure and sorrowful songs resonate deeply with human emotions.
Lord Tai Xu, tired of the morning revelry and delighted by the night feast, ordered the music to stop, the clear strings to be loosened, the candles to be extinguished, and the crickets to be quieted. He drank fragrant wine, played the qin, and paused for a moment. As the good night turned to chill, the wind through the bamboo formed a melody. Lacking close companions, he felt increasingly lonely.
Gazing at the moonlight shining on the evening sky and listening to the autumn calls of the crickets, he played the strings of his qin, the sound carefully tuned and harmonized. He wandered through the winding paths of his dwelling, feeling sorrowful as if hearing the melancholy notes of Yang E’s song. The forest sounds were faint, and the waves on the pond disappeared. His heart was heavy with emotion, and he had no outlet for his feelings.
Moved by the sound of the crickets, he began to sing a long song. The song went: 'Time is passing, and the echo of famous voices is heard. The night is long, and we share the bright moon. I yearn for the wind, where can I rest? The frost-covered maple leaves fall, and the sounds of the world fade away.' Before the song ended, the night passed. The hall was filled with changing expressions, and everyone was at a loss.
Then, he sang another song, which went: 'The moon has set, and the dew will soon dry. The time is late, and there is no one to return with. A good time to return, as the light dew wets my clothes.' Lord Tai Xu said to Kong Xuan, 'Well done!' He then ordered the attendants to offer a toast of a thousand gold pieces from Pingyuan, and to repair the hundred jade panels from Chu Xiang. He respectfully admired the beautiful sound, never tiring of it."
13. 促織歌 - song to promote weaving
The care of crickets requires diligence; the remnants of summer heat should be kept near coolness. As autumn deepens, one should be wary of the cold wind and avoid frequent baths to prevent injuries. The container for keeping crickets should be spacious, and the food should be provided at appropriate times with careful attention. Water and food should be well-balanced to ensure the crickets are strong, and they should not be exposed to sunlight. Watering should be done thoroughly to support their vigor, and one must not neglect feeding them. The soil in the container should be enriched with earthworm manure and properly covered according to the yin-yang principles. Regularly replace old water with fresh liquid. If offering grass leaves for the crickets to nibble, ensure they are soft and not too tough. Proper arrangement of the container is essential to avoid disturbing them. After drinking wine, avoid inspecting them, as it may affect their behavior. Do not feed them oranges or other inappropriate foods, as it may harm them. Ensure their environment is clean and free from oil smoke. If they haven't fought for a while, check them frequently and store them carefully. If they are sluggish or have damaged mandibles, they should be treated immediately. Ignoring their strength and weaknesses can lead to losses. Be meticulous with the container to avoid escape. Follow this guide to maintain the crickets in good condition and make their mandibles strong. It is truly regrettable that a clean and proper insect remains for years, resonating through autumn with its song.
拜星月慢 (Paying Respects to the Moon)
The sea swallow returns east, the golden wind rises from the west, and the dew is heavy on the ground. Crickets, filled with autumnal excitement, find their refuge in desolate walls and gardens. To find them, one must combine the jade pot and golden cage. Their chirps resonate like clear notes. Red and yellow crab shells are rare in a lifetime. In a painted hall, the feelings nurtured through the seasons are not easily satisfied. Let the emotional waves gently spread. The soaring eagle, renowned for its unmatched battle prowess, has faced countless battles. In the autumn of its years, the hero’s deeds are drawing to a close.
濟顛和尚瘞促織鷓鴣天 (The Monk Ji Dian Burying the Cricket)
The cricket, Wang Yanzhang, has one short antenna and one long. Despite its victory in thirty-six fights, it is still called Wang the Iron Lance. Don’t be disheartened by its troubles; all things in the world are impermanent. Last night’s sudden frost feels like a fleeting dream.
又把火文 (Another Fire Document)
This demon is but a small creature, nestled in a rock or mud hole. At night, when it is quiet and the wind is clear, its cries can be heard. It causes sorrow to wanderers and tears to widows, constantly urging people to weave. It wastes much of one’s idle energy. It’s not about competing for land; why then is there such a fierce resistance? Meeting it means it displays anger with flared wings and claws. After several skirmishes, it is driven away. The winner fans its wings and announces victory loudly, while the loser flees in haste. Its possessions are taken away, leaving just enough food. Even if it has golden and jade cages, it remains a reflection of worldly vanity. When the frost suddenly falls, even Wang Yanzhang cannot endure it. This morning, as it faces its demise, what is left to reveal? It is but a blind, raging fire, revealing its true self.
咦!托生在功德池邊,卻相伴阿彌陀佛 (Ah! Rebirth at the Pond of Merit, Accompanied by Amitabha Buddha)
又撒骨文 (Another Bone Document)
One night, the pale frost falls; the east chrysanthemums resemble golden decorations. Last night, in a stable dream, I did not hear the cricket’s song. All living things, including birds and insects, have life and death. Today, the cricket has passed away, and its body is burned in the fire. Its once strong fighting spirit is now at rest. For the future, it will be placed in the Jade Lake, listening to the monk’s advice: both grievances and sins are now gone.
咦!一輪明月浸波中,萬里碧天光皎潔 (Ah! A Full Moon Drenched in the Waves, the Sky Gleams with Brightness)
The monk Ji Gong finishes his recitation and tosses the ashes into the lake. A gentle breeze reveals a young boy in blue robes, clasping his hands and saying, "Thank you, Master, for the guidance. The disciple has now attained transcendence." With that, the wind ceases, and he disappears. Ah! Even small creatures can be touched by spiritual transformation, so they are included for observation.
捉促織法 (Methods for Catching Crickets)
To catch crickets, you must use a bamboo tube to capture them. In early autumn, search in grassy fields; in mid-autumn, listen for their sound near garden walls and then locate their entrance. If it is indeed a cricket’s home, open the entrance with your hand and use a thin blade of grass to coax it out. If it refuses to come out, you may pour water into the burrow to force it out. Then, examine whether the cricket is male or female and its quality. If it has two tails, is well-colored, broad, and complete, quickly capture and place it in a container. Do not keep those with three tails, deformities, or poor coloring.
收買秘訣 (Secrets of Buying Crickets)
Look for crickets with a round head, long legs, a wide neck, and strong mandibles. The color should be aged and the wings without marks. Crickets with red or pig liver-colored mandibles are unlucky. Avoid those with narrow legs or red claws; the king of crickets is one with strong pincers.
看法 (Evaluation Criteria)
A cricket with red and white striped head, green neck, golden wings, and gold or silver stripes is of the highest quality. Yellow striped heads are second best, followed by purple gold and black. The various colors of crickets are easy to find, but yellow and purple are rare. The best crickets have a smooth, firm body. Purple with smooth texture is especially rare and valuable. A cricket with a large head, long legs, broad back, and strong mandibles is certainly good for fighting. These traits are essential. The head’s stripes should be fine and clear, not crooked or twisted. The straight, fine lines of the head are preferable.
早秋看法 (Early Autumn Evaluation)
Caring for crickets is like training soldiers; selecting crickets is like choosing generals. Use large, old containers for rearing. In early autumn, choose crickets with large heads, long legs, broad bodies, and solid appearances. Place them in the container and do not fight them immediately, as their energy may not be sufficient and their colors may not have fully developed. Crickets with hard bodies and strong mandibles after a few days are better. Crickets whose colors change from dark to light should be kept, while those whose colors change from light to dark should be discarded. Good fighters should be chosen as generals. Test only one or two at a time to avoid harming them with excessive fights.
中秋看法 (Mid-Autumn Evaluation)
For crickets in mid-autumn, similar to a person in middle age, one must carefully assess their condition. Use three crickets for evaluation, but do not keep them in the same container to avoid disruption from mating calls. This may cause harm to their bodies. Assess them carefully!
晚秋看法 (Late Autumn Evaluation)
In late autumn, crickets become weaker and more difficult to care for. Feed them meat and keep them in a warm, wind-protected place to prevent cold damage. Use paper or wooden containers for their habitat. Feed them with cooked and shelled sheep eyes, finely ground chestnuts, or other foods such as sesame seeds, cooked lotus seeds, or raw winter melon seeds mixed with rice. Finally, feed them with cooked shrimp, crab meat, and hot eel flesh, avoiding oily food. If they refuse food, they may be old, sick, or dying and should not be fought.
論形 (On Appearance)
觀促織形像 (Observing Cricket Appearance)
The mandibles resemble centipede pincers, the mouth like a lion’s, the head like a dragonfly’s, and the legs like a grasshopper’s. The color should be appropriate, and the texture should be dry and smooth.
頭色美者 (Beautiful Head Colors)
Crickets with red heads and fine yellow stripes are the best. Yellow heads with fine white stripes are second best. Pale yellow, tender yellow, red, greenish-golden, purple, white, and other similar head colors are also valued. The head should have fine, straight lines.
頭色惡者 (Unattractive Head Colors)
Crickets with bright head colors and non-transparent stripes or patchy areas are undesirable. Heads that are smooth like oil, with thin legs and dark spots, are also unsuitable. However, heads like persimmon, agate, and crab-like are acceptable but still not ideal. Avoid those with half-red stripes or vibrant colors like dots.
各色不看 (Colors Not to Consider)
Crickets with non-transparent red, yellow, red, white, or black stripes, thin wings, and short legs are not suitable. Avoid those with irregular heads, short mandibles, or inconsistent coloring.
論頭 (On the Head)
A large, round head with shallow and clear lines is ideal. The head should have fine, straight lines that are bright and clear.
Small, dull heads with thick lines and uneven surfaces are not desirable.
論臉 (On the Face)
Crickets with faces of various colors, with a long and narrow appearance, are good. A black face like a pot’s bottom is particularly strong and desirable.
Crickets with drunken, cat-like faces and disorganized patterns are undesirable. Such crickets should be avoided.
論頂 (On the Top)
A top resembling a dragonfly’s, with prominent features and correct color, is ideal.
Tops with tight, patterned sections, and no hair, are not desirable. Even if they have a perfect appearance, they will eventually cause trouble.
Tops with blue or greenish patterns, white hair, and bright markings are excellent. Those with dim or imperfect features are less desirable.
Crickets with short and smooth tops are acceptable.
論翅 (On the Wings)
Wings that are purple, blue, or wood-like with thin, smooth textures are preferred. Black wings like ink, with spots, are less desirable.
Wings with thick, unwrinkled textures, and golden-purple color, are ideal.
論腿 (On the Legs)
Crickets with large, round, and strong thighs and thick, iron-like legs are best. Those with white or yellow legs are superior.
Crickets with short, thin legs and blackish hues are less desirable and should be avoided.
論肉 (On the Meat)
Meat with purple-black, green-yellow hues, and white or light-colored is preferred. Meat that is not pure in color or has too many red spots should be avoided.
Crickets with impure or mottled meat colors are less suitable for fighting.
論蝴蜂形 (On the Appearance of Bumblebees)
Crickets that resemble bumblebees with slender legs and a thin waist are ideal. Those with yellow patterns and a single pair of pincers are also good.
論螻蟈形 (On the Appearance of Mole Crickets)
Mole crickets with long mandibles, short legs, and a pointed head are desirable. They should have a tail extending over the shoulders, resembling a female’s form.
論蜘蛛形 (On the Appearance of Spiders)
Crickets with a compact body resembling a spider, long mandibles, and six legs, are good. Those with short wings and complete shoulder coverage are also ideal.
論螳螂形 (On the Appearance of Mantises)
Crickets with short heads and long bodies are less useful. Those with good wings are preferred. Mantises with six long, sharp legs are ideal.
又 (Again)
Crickets with narrow bodies, sharp mandibles, and a large belly are not desirable. Those with a protruding head and long legs are less suitable for fighting in late autumn.
論蚱蜢形 (On the Appearance of Grasshoppers)
Crickets with large heads, pointed shoulders, and long legs, similar to the shape of a grasshopper, are desirable. Those with high and thick bodies are likely to win in late autumn.
論玉蜂形 (On the Appearance of Jade Bees)
Crickets resembling jade bees, with pointed wings and a rare appearance, are valuable. If encountered, they should not be avoided, as they are not common and are highly prized.
論棗核形 (On the Appearance of Jujube Kernels)
Crickets with bodies shaped like jujube kernels, with pointed ends, are less desirable. They may seem strong but are ultimately not effective.
論灶雞形 (On the Appearance of Kitchen Chickens)
Crickets with pointed heads, narrow necks, and dragging bellies are not ideal. Those with white wings covering their backs and short legs are less desirable.
論蟑螂形 (On the Appearance of Cockroaches)
Crickets resembling cockroaches with wide wings, sharp heads, and long mandibles are less desirable. They should only be used for limited battles.
論蝴蝶形 (On the Appearance of Butterflies)
Crickets resembling butterflies with pointed heads and large bellies are not suitable. They may cause problems and should be avoided.
論蝦脊龜形 (On the Appearance of Shrimp and Turtle Shells)
Crickets resembling turtle shells or shrimp backs, with red coloration, long legs, and a broad body, are less desirable. Black and white, with golden silk lines, are ideal.
論龜鶴形 (On the Appearance of Turtles and Cranes)
Crickets with turtle-like heads and crane-like bodies, with two wings that do not make noise, are good. They are considered high-quality.
論土狗形 (On the Appearance of Earth Dogs)
Crickets with coarse heads, broad necks, and low, dragging bellies are less desirable. Those with wings covering their backs and strong, thick legs should be avoided.
論土蜂形 (On the Appearance of Earth Bees)
Crickets resembling earth bees with rare purple-yellow coloring are valuable. Such crickets are exceptional and should be sought out.
土蜂解 (Explanation of Earth Bees)
These crickets are rare, with purple-yellow coloring being the best. Other colors are less desirable. They are known as "light-winged bees" with no rivals.
論棗枝形 (On the Appearance of Jujube Branches)
Crickets with bodies resembling jujube branches, with pointed ends, are less desirable. They may appear strong but are ultimately ineffective.
論蟹踞形 (On the Appearance of Crabs)
Crickets with curved bodies like crabs are valuable, regardless of color or stripe patterns. They are sought after for their unique appearance.

A pale yellow-white head with three sharp points,
Amber-colored, body round and thick,
Teeth are red, thin, and long, quite peculiar.
309 飛促織 Flying Cricket:
310
Those found in trees are excellent, those in the soil are not good.
Those from the mountains are called "Mountain Rulers."
After capturing a flying cricket, feed it with live prey and place it in a quiet spot, avoiding human presence.
It also fears wind, so avoid letting the wind pass through, and keep away from cricket chirping.
When people gather to watch, the cricket will win if they shout together.
311
Flying insects can fight, with light and agile bodies.
If the wings are pulled out and form sores, it suffers pain in battle.
You can use scissors to trim the inner wings,
Then it will win hundreds of battles.
312 促織論賦 On Cricket Fighting:
313
When crickets fight, they need human guidance.
The greedy ones make the big crickets suffer.
Even if it wins, it may still get injured,
And the misjudgment at the scene will cause it to lose the edge.
314 論養 On Raising Crickets:
315 養法十二條 Twelve Rules for Raising Crickets:
316
The bowl must be old, not new.
In hot weather, the color of the bowl should be dim.
When raising them past the Double Ninth Festival (the ninth day of the ninth lunar month),
Do not replace the old bowl with a new one.
317
When the weather turns cold and frost falls,
Bathe them in cold water infused with aconite.
Always keep the bowl tightly enclosed.
At this time, use a small water container.
318
Feed them after noon,
If you do not, the result will be a waste of effort.
The water should be as cold as ice,
And add some Sichuan copper.
319
Only feed them one type of food,
Do not trust others to tell you to change it.
Chickpeas and water chestnut meat are unsuitable,
Nothing compares to daily yellow rice.
320 配合 (三尾必須白露前收畜) Breeding:
(Three tails must be harvested before White Dew.)
321 呼雌之法與君知
I will share with you the method of calling the female cricket.
If the female does not respond, replace her immediately.
If one doesn’t respond, try another.
However, calling too frequently is not advisable.
322 蛩聲不發莫添雙
If the cricket doesn't chirp, don't pair it with another.
Continuous calling may make the cricket overly excited.
The three-tailed black-headed cricket should be small.
Trim its antennae and claws to match.
323 禁忌
Sulfur and the scent of orange are the hardest to endure.
When preparing medicine, keep it far away from the crickets.
Keep the cricket’s place dim and avoid direct sunlight.
325 養胎
A cricket carrying eggs is called a "breeding demon."
The success of hatching depends entirely on the shrimp.
Be patient when raising them; rushing will lead to many losses in battle.
327 浴雌
When feeding the three-tailed cricket, use a bell frequently.
This will prevent the cricket from injuring itself while feeding.
Bathe the three-tailed cricket regularly to maintain its vibrant color when calling the female.
329 防微
Every morning, inspect the cricket’s condition.
Lift it from its pot and listen carefully.
Observe the sound of its chirping to gauge its mood.
If it chirps like a tiger’s roar, it’s in good spirits.
331 養嫩子 (用大盆,傍日影曬之。到中秋,下土盆為妙)
The tile should always be wet, the nest always dry.
Ensure no water accumulates in the pot, and avoid frequent inspection during hot weather.
333 辨蟲老嫩
To distinguish between an old and a young cricket, the secret lies in observing its antennae.
A cricket with worn teeth and yellow color is old, while one with bright, hanging teeth is young.
A high-headed cricket is not inclined to fight, while one with a low head is considered an old fox.
With this secret in hand, you will rarely lose a battle.
335 浴蟲法
After a victorious battle, soak the cricket in crushed duckweed juice.
Let it bathe in river water and feed it two or three water shrimp.
After feeding, remove the three-tailed crickets.
337 三秋養蛩法
In early autumn, place the cricket in a cool, moist pot.
In mid-autumn, use an earthen pot.
In late autumn, cover the pot with paper.
If the cricket refuses to eat due to the cold, feed it two or three blood-filled mosquitoes.
This is the method for raising crickets through the three autumns.
339 喂養訣法
In early autumn, the pot should be cool.
In late autumn, protect it from the cold wind.
Use an old, large pot, and feed with the core of fruits.
Do not expose the food to sunlight.
Water should never be lacking, and food should not be forgotten.
Use fine soil as bedding to keep it cool.
Clean the pot regularly and change the water.
Avoid using grass or vegetables, as they can harm the cricket’s teeth.
Greasy or oily food is inauspicious.
The cover should be secure, and the pot can be moved without worry.
Never handle the crickets after drinking, as it may make them restless.
Avoid strong scents like citrus or musk.
343 安頓之處
Keep the crickets away from oil jars.
Beware of placing them near scented wood.
On non-fighting days, keep them securely stored.
Be cautious and ensure they do not escape.
344 秘密之法,用意參詳
There are secret methods that require careful consideration.
345 趙九公養法
Feed the crickets with perch, reed roots, root worms, hemp root worms, mother beetles, segmented worms, jumping shrimp, mosquitoes, and flat worms.
347 雜人養法
Crush pepper leaves and mix them with rice to feed the crickets.
Capture spiders from grass and mix them with honey before feeding.
349 戈千公養法
Use powdered yellow mulberry leaves and pure rice to make cakes, then dry and soak them.
Grind the mixture and feed it evenly with rice.
351 蘇胡子養法
Use segmented worms from the fence before frost.
Feed them every five days by mixing them with flat worms and grinding them.
353 王主簿養法
Cook millet and feed it to the crickets.
Alternatively, use persimmons, eel, chicken, goose, crab, fish, or shrimp, and cook them with rice to feed the crickets.
355 積食不清化訣
If the crickets are constipated, the red worms by the water are excellent.
Grind them finely and feed them in two portions.
After feeding, they will win battles easily.
357 論斗
Eight principles of fighting:
358 比頭比項比身材
Compare the head, neck, and body.
If one is significantly larger, separate them.
Short-tailed crickets with bald antennae are not valuable for fighting.
360 其二防敵
Keep your eyes on the opponent at all times.
During the fight, there are many changes to watch for.
If the opponent turns, block with the pole.
If it kicks, it might injure its face.
362 其三擇牽
Choose a long, straight pole.
Do not pull it too forcefully when lowering it.
A sudden drop into the barrier is like a lightning strike from a clear sky.
Steering the pole is like steering a ship; if it tilts, disaster strikes.
The pole should be selected before White Dew, and a good pole is worth its weight in gold.
364 其四接力
Allow five days between fights.
Frequent fighting damages the cricket’s teeth.
If the cricket refuses to eat, it’s likely due to dental damage.
Once its teeth are repaired, it will eat normally.
366 其五六不鬥法
If the cricket is sluggish, it should not fight.
If it doesn’t eat, delay the fight.
If it gnashes its teeth, it should not be put into battle.
368 八不鬥法
Long crickets do not fight wide ones.
Black crickets do not fight yellow ones.
Thin crickets do not fight thick ones.
Young crickets do not fight old ones.
Healthy crickets do not fight sick ones.
Weak crickets do not fight strong ones.
Small crickets do not fight large ones.
Crickets with illnesses should not engage in ordinary fights.
370 促織三拗
Three rules of cricket fighting:
One: A winning cricket will call, a losing one will not.
Two: If the female mounts the male’s back, the male will lose.
Three: A cricket that has laid eggs will have extra strength.
372 其六審勢
If the cricket is not in the mood, do not force it to fight.
When separating them, touch its face.
If you keep provoking it, it might damage its teeth.
After the initial fervor, the cricket’s behavior will change.
374 其七惜才
A strong warrior cricket that wins every battle should not be overused.
A weak cricket cannot withstand a strong opponent.
Overestimating it will only lead to its demise.
376 其八鬥敗
Losing a battle is not the same as an ordinary defeat.
After a loss, feed it well and let it rest for ten days.
On the day of the fight, bring it out slightly hungry.
It will once again become a great general.
378 古云:三口五口,隔宵乃斗
It is said: "Three or five bites, then fight the next day."
"One or two bites, fight after three days."
"A single bite victory may seem good, but plan carefully."
On the day of the fight, observe the cricket’s mood.
Only when it’s eager to fight should you pit it against another.
A single-bite victory is not always a sign of strength; sometimes it’s a fluke.
Be cautious to avoid future mistakes and regret.
380 鬥不可頻
It is said that after a fight, the cricket should rest for three to five days before fighting again.
If it has fought two or three dozen times, it should rest for six or seven days.
The frequency of fighting is detrimental to the cricket’s health and strength.
381 嘗被咬臂贏物
It’s said that in a fight, even if a cricket has its limbs bitten, it can still win.
If it’s over-excited, delay the fight by a day.
If it has bitten its opponent's limbs, it might be reluctant to fight.
If it has broken its antennae, do not fight it immediately.
If it has injured its claws, do not force it to fight.
382 交鋒論法
The art of combat between crickets is like a tiger's fight, where each side may submit or persist.
The observer should closely examine the size and appearance of the crickets, ensuring that they are evenly matched.
If they are of equal color and temperament, only then should they be pitted against each other.
Once this is decided, and the crickets are riled up, they should be allowed to engage without interference.
If one cricket dominates, the match may end quickly; if not, it may be a long and drawn-out struggle.
If either cricket sustains an injury, such as damaging its teeth, it should not be pitted again immediately.
Cover the injured cricket with damp paper to soothe it, and only when it has fully recovered should it be reintroduced to combat.
384 初對芡法
When introducing crickets to each other for the first time, ensure they are equally excited.
Let them engage by first striking each other's tails and then gradually working their way to the legs.
If they show interest, allow them to engage further by gently guiding them with the pole.
Observe their behavior carefully and only when they seem ready should you initiate the fight.
386 上鋒芡法
If a cricket wins a fight, guide it gently to the center of the arena.
Cover it with a damp paper to keep it calm and maintain its fighting spirit.
Do not force it into combat too soon, and avoid any actions that might dampen its enthusiasm.
Let it recover naturally before engaging it in the next fight.
388 下鋒芡法
When using the pole to provoke the cricket, be gentle and avoid over-stimulation.
Guide the cricket by lightly brushing its head, back, and tail, and observe its reactions.
If the cricket responds positively, you can gradually intensify the provocation.
Ensure that the cricket is in good condition before engaging it in battle.
390 鬥勝養法
After a cricket wins a fight, bathe it in crushed duckweed juice.
Follow this with a bath in river water and give it a mixture of child’s urine and clear water to drink.
Feed it crushed green jumping shrimp to keep it healthy.
Let it rest for two or three days before the next battle.
392 交鋒策論
There are two types of crickets: those that bite and those that merely engage.
A cricket that usually engages in combat but suddenly bites its opponent might be facing a weaker opponent.
Conversely, if a cricket known for biting suddenly refrains, it may be up against a particularly formidable opponent.
394 比合對論
First, compare the heads, then the legs, and finally, the overall body.
Crickets with long legs may eventually lose their advantage, while those that are tall and sturdy are superior.
Large heads are advantageous, and loose wings are not a concern.
Crickets with three bronze bell-like spots on their foreheads should be treated with caution.
396 論病
Crickets can suffer from four ailments:
Head tilting upwards.
Grinding teeth.
Curled antennae.
Trembling legs.
If the tail is uneven, the cricket may have been deprived of water.
If both tails droop, the cricket is old and near death.
Any of these symptoms require careful treatment, and if all are present, the cricket should not be used for fighting.
399 治蟲身熱
If a cricket's body is hot and it is not responding to the female's call, crush green grass and squeeze out the juice.
Mix the juice with sugar water and bathe the cricket in it, then rinse with river water to prevent shivering.
401 醫傷損方
If a cricket is injured after a fight, with uneven teeth or body damage, do not feed it immediately.
If feeding is necessary, provide only a small amount.
Prepare a mixture of child’s urine and clear water, and let the cricket drink it.
Let it rest and recover for ten days.
403 去飛翅法
If a cricket develops floating wings that allow it to fly, you can remove them by holding the wings and submerging the cricket in water.
The wings will come off without harming the cricket, and after six or seven days, it will be ready to fight again.
405 用三尾貼法歌
When using the three-tailed method, do not add a second.
Calling too frequently may drive the cricket mad.
A three-tailed black-headed cricket should be small, with a pointed head and a single leg.
When feeding the three-tailed cricket, keep it well-fed to prevent injury.
Bathe the three-tailed cricket regularly to keep its colors vibrant.
407 下三尾法
In autumn, collect the three-tailed crickets before the White Dew and raise them.
Bathe them every three to five days.
After removing parasites, the cricket will be healthy and ready to win battles.
409 白花草訣 (又名旱蓮草)
This grass grows by the pond, but few recognize it.
It has pointed leaves and white flowers, with green stems.
Pick it whole, wash it, and feed it to the crickets.
This grass helps eliminate impurities from the cricket’s stomach.
Feed it regularly to keep the cricket strong, especially in summer, though it is not necessary in late autumn.
411 蝦娑訣
Shrimp are found in rivers, but they are difficult to catch.
Fill a basin with water and catch them, then feed the dead shrimp to the crickets.
Shrimp are cooling but should not be overfed, as too much can harm the cricket.
They help alleviate heat and keep the cricket comfortable.
413 總言三首
Do not underestimate the cricket's abilities, but patience is essential.
Fight sparingly to avoid unnecessary losses.
After each fight, let the cricket rest for three days, and after a major battle, at least ten days.
If you do not follow these rules, the cricket may be overexerted and lose.
415 其二
The mysteries of cricket raising and fighting are subtle and require careful study.
By understanding even a third of these principles, you can often win and return with a victorious cricket.
417 其三
The nature of crickets is complex, with emotions that are hard to discern.
A cricket that grinds its teeth can be a fierce fighter, and one that flaps its wings is ready for victory.
Understand the subtle signs to avoid danger.
Even if a cricket’s teeth are damaged, it can recover with proper care.
419 題促織二首
The stars move low past the southern tower, and in the quiet night, the world feels like an icy mirror.
The dewdrops are clear and cool, and the crickets chirp melodiously.
The crickets sing out their feelings freely, their song rising and falling without end.
They chirp until dawn, then seek a hidden place to rest with their mate.
In jade jars and golden cages, the crickets are carefully fed, cherished daily by the young nobles.
These crickets, eager to assert dominance, willingly risk their small lives in battle.
They beat their wings triumphantly, and after washing their mandibles, they seem ready to fight again.
How great is the world that brings forth all creatures, yet how small is their ambition.
